Fixing Guide
for Erinstone® Irish Blue Limestone
•  ThinLine Tiles
ThinLine tiles are specifically designed for easy, fast and risk free fixing. They can be fixed on an existing floor, plaster work (walls) or even a wooden floor board when using an appropriate flexible cement based adhesive. This is a step by step guide that will enable non professionals
to fix these tiles.
Preparation of floor or wall surface
Before starting make sure that:
Underground is dry : It is very important that no residual moisture
is caught under the natural stone tile. For equalisation layers (sand – cement) or the plaster work in new buildings we recommend following rule of thumb :
Wait 1 week per 10 mm thickness before fixing ThinLine.
Ex : floor equalising layer 70 mm : wait 7 weeks Plaster work +/- 20 mm : wait 2 weeks
Fixing surface is sufficiently even: Typical thickness for cement
based adhesive is +/- 3 mm. This gives little room for
compensating unevenness in the floor surface. When using
special ‘thick layer’ cement based adhesives, the layer
thickness can be increased to max. +/- 7 mm.
Adhesives
We recommend following products for fixing of ThinLine Antique® :
o

o

o
FERMAPLUS, white: produced by Weber. White powder in 25 kg bags that needs to be mixed with water.
Consumption : +/- 2.5 kg/m_
ARDAFLEX, white: produced by Bostic Findley.
White powder in 25 kg bags that needs to be mixed with water. Consumption : +/- 2.5 kg/m_
GRANIRAPIDE: produced by Mapei. 2 components adhesive. Powder is mixed with special latex, no addition of water
Other cement based adhesives might be considered.
They should be suitable for natural limestone and have high flexibility and ‘open time’.
Using the adhesive
Use a 6 mm (*) comb to evenly distribute the adhesive
over the floor surface:
o

o

o
make sure that a bit more than the surface of the tile
is covered before putting it in.
the position of the comb determines the thickness
of the adhesive layer:
                              > more vertical: thicker layer
                              > more horizontal: thinner layer
the tiles should be pressed so that the adhesive layer is compressed +/- 1.5 mm (or 50 %) to ensure good contact.
Putting in the tiles
Because ThinLine Antique® is a 100% pure natural product diversity within the tiles is an inherent characteristic. Differences in colour as well as in smoothness, calcite veins, and concentrations of fossils will all contribute to this richness in diversity.
VERY IMPORTANT: When fixing you should always use tiles from different pallets and different packing at the same time. Make sure that lighter and darker, less and more fossils, etc. are well mixed to form a rich and coherent floor surface.
Make sure that the back of the tiles are clean and free of dust.
Plastic spacers can be use to obtain joints of min. 3 mm or more. These spacers are positioned at every corner of the tiles. Make sure that they are sufficiently deep as they should be hidden when joints are filled.Tiles can be cut to size using a grinding disk suitable for concrete. Better still, use a diamond disk for natural stone.
Filling the joints
This can be done 2 to 3 days fixing. We recommend however
to wait 1 week. We recommend using pure grey (or white) cement and some Compactuna mixed with water for the filling of joints.
Other coloured joint fillers are also available. The colour of the joint will influence considerably the total look. You might therefore ask advice at your ThinLine distributor. To avoid discoloration of tile edges, coloured joint fillers should be suitable for porous natural materials like marble and limestone. Mix the dry powder with water until it is sufficiently liquid to be able to fully penetrate the joints. Pore some of if over the tiles and start to wipe it diagonally over the tiles, using a rubber wiper until all joints are filled. Use a humid cloth to remove the excess cement and to clean the tile surface:
o Start removing excess cement soon after filling the joints
o Divide the floor in areas of +/- 10 m2 for filling of the joint
followed by removal of excess cement, to avoid that
cement will dry to the tile surface
o Clean the cloth very regularly using clean water to avoid
a cement veil on the surface
o Avoid rubbing in the direction of the joint as this would open
the joints again. Better is to use round movement and to
cover a bigger surface with the cloth.
o Finish off with a dry cloth to polish up the tile surfaces
o Close doors and windows to avoid draft during
   the dry out period.
VERY IMPORTANT: Never use cement veil removers.
These products can permanently damage your tile floor.
Make sure that excess cement is adequately removed soon
after the filling of joints. DO NOT STOP UNTIL THE FLOOR
SURFACE IS 100% CLEAN.
Expansion joints
With floor surfaces over +/- 40 m or floor lengths over 8 m, it could be necessary to include a flexible joint. In this case we recommend looking for the advice of a qualified fixer.
Floor Heating
ThinLine Antique® can be perfectly combined with floor heating.
